Summit Take Away, Lalor Park

It’s a sad state of affairs when your go-to fish and chip shop changes owners and with that, sees a dramatic downturn in the quality of their food. It wasn’t that the previous owners made amazing fish and chips, but they were decently tasty and reasonably priced. While you have other decent fish and chip options, they’re not half as convenient. And so, it is that D and I had craved fish and chips for some time before we ended up at Summit Take Away in Lalor Park. The shop is bustling with a constant stream of customers around lunch hour.

The last time we visited, we’d been after a deep fried Mars bar.

Dipping chips into gravy is a delicious habit. The gravy (small tub for $1.00) is thick and coats each chip with a moreish meaty flavour. Indeed, the gravy is so delicious that it makes up for the lack lustre chips (small for $4.50). I like my chips crispy on the outside, pillowy soft on the inside and generously salted.

To go with our chips, we each have a piece of crumbed fish ($4.50). Unfortunately, the fish was rather dry with a thick crumb coating and tasted much like frozen fish from the supermarket. It also had a reddish tinge to the crumbed coating and a generous dusting of chicken salt, which I’d expected and didn’t receive in the chips.

D and I won’t write off Summit Take Away, but we’ll try out other fish and chip stores before returning.

Summit Take Away is located at 48 Freeman St, Lalor Park NSW 2147.
