Waffle Co, Penrith

Waffles drizzled in chocolate are a staple in dessert parlours in Sydney, so when I found Waffle Co with their more adventurous dessert waffles, I was keen to give drop en route to the Blue Mountains.

Waffle Co looks nothing like how I’d expected. Indeed, there is no obvious signage that I thought I’d set myself up to be disappointed when I was faced with shop with closed shutters and a shop for lease next to it. Luckily, we quickly pulled up Google Maps.

Inside, it’s a cosy atmosphere with a hipster vibe with mismatched furniture.

D starts with a Mocha ($4.50). It’s a decent coffee with rich chocolate notes.

We came for the Turkish Delight waffle. They were out of rose ice cream on the day we went, so we went with our choice: Wapple Pie ($13.50).

The Wapple Pie is a ‘cinnamon waffle combined with a stewed apple pie filling and vanilla bean ice cream’. The presentation isn’t the best, but looks are deceiving here.

It comes out steaming hot from the stewed apple pie filling. The filling is tart but this balances the sweetness of the waffle, which is pleasantly restrained in its cinnamon notes although it could’ve used a few extra minutes in the waffle iron to crisp up the edges. The vanilla bean ice cream is smooth and creamy, giving much needed cold relief from the hot apple pie filling. Overall, a truly enjoyable waffle – we’d be keen to return for the Turkish delight waffle.

Waffle Co is located at Shop 1 138/134 Henry St, Penrith NSW 2750.
