Shizuoka Satori Okoicha Langue de Chat

This is the Shizuoka Satori Okoicha Langue de Chat. It featured langue de chat made with matcha selected by Matsuda, the eighth-generation head of Shincha-en and Japan’s top tea taster. The cookies were crafted around the concept of experiencing tea from drinking to eating, with an emphasis on capturing the tea’s aroma from the first taste.

It was awarded the Monde Selection Gold Award for three consecutive years in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Each box contained 10 individually sealed cookies. Each measured approximately 4 × 4 × 0.3 cm, with a pale golden-green matcha-flavoured cookie sandwiching a green matcha-flavoured white chocolate filling.

On tasting, the cookie had a firm, crisp crunch—slightly denser than the version from Malebranche—before reaching the matcha chocolate centre. A slight sweet glaze on the exterior added to the crunch, which persisted throughout the bite before the cookie crumbled into a fine texture and rehydrated on the palate, melting together with the white chocolate for a smooth finish. Despite its ‘double matcha’ composition, with matcha generously used in both the biscuit and filling, the flavour was rounded with a restrained bitterness. It retained a balance of crispness and creaminess but was less intense than the Malebranche version, which matcha enthusiasts might favour for its richer matcha flavour, creamier chocolate, and lighter cookie.

This Shizuoka Satori Okoicha Langue de Chat contained 10 pieces. It was produced in Japan and received as a gift from family visiting Japan in 2024.
