This is the Nestle KitKat Sugar Butter Tree, made using 0.19% butter. A collaboration between KitKat and the popular Tōkyō-based confectionery brand Sugar Butter Tree, this product draws on Sugar Butter Tree’s signature “Sandwich” snack—created in 2010 by Gin no Budō—which combines a blend of cereal grains with butter to form a crisp, aromatic biscuit sandwiching a smooth white chocolate cream.

Each box contained six individually wrapped mini bars.

Each bar measured approximately 5 x 3.3 x 1 cm and featured a cream-coloured coating speckled with brown, encasing two wafers with a visible inner layer of butter-flavoured cream. The aroma was distinctly fragrant, recalling misugaru (Korean multi-grain powder) cereal and milk.

On tasting, the outer coating delivered an immediate milky sweetness, with the chocolate layer embedded with crushed cereal fragments from Sugar Butter Tree’s seven-grain dough. This resulted in a crackly-crunchy texture that exceeded the standard KitKat wafer crispness. The interior yielded to a smooth, rich butter-flavoured cream, cooler on the tongue than the melting exterior, offering a concentrated milky-buttery note. The overall impression was of an indulgent cereal and milk experience, akin to a misugaru latte, with layered textures and a comforting flavour profile.

Overall, this was an interesting collaboration with excellent textural contrast and a well-executed butter cereal flavour, though it leaned heavily into a sweet, milky profile for our palate.
