TopTea Gardenia Tea Latte with Chestnut Mochi

This is the Gardenia Tea Latte with Chestnut Mochi ($11.90; no ice, 50% sugar) from TopTea.

The beverage presented with a layered appearance, with opaque tan globs of chestnut paste at the base alongside opaque white mochi, filled to the top with gardenia-scented green tea milk tea, topped with whipped cream and garnished with candied pecans.

Initial contact delivered immediate fragrant, floral gardenia notes, carried through by the mellow natural sweetness of the milk and its smooth mouthfeel. Through the mid-palate, the toppings entered with the smooth paste texture of the chestnut alongside the very soft, almost liquid texture of the milk mochi. The milk, however, across the milk tea, mochi and whipped cream created a dominant dairy profile that largely eclipsed the earthy nuttiness expected from the chestnut paste, leaving it to contribute primarily texture rather than flavour. Instead, the nutty character emerged towards the finish through the crunch and flavour of the lingering candied pecans, which detracted somewhat from the chestnut as the intended seasonal ingredient.

Overall, a milk tea with a floral-to-dairy flavour trajectory and layered soft-to-crunchy texture, resulting in a structurally varied beverage in which the dominant dairy profile muted the chestnut, while the candied pecans supplied the primary nutty flavour.
