Burgers seem to have featured a lot more in my diet these past few months. I’m actually not much of a burger person, but the people I hang out with love a good burger. And according to K, Chur Burger in Surry Hills makes the best burgers.
Chur Burger would seem to be run by New Zealanders. ‘Chur’ is apparently their way of greeting that originated from ‘cheers’, which then became ‘cheer’, and then ‘chur’. In their selection of hot sauces available at each table, a kiwifruit flavoured one awaits (it’s hot and you can taste the kiwifruit).

I go for a burger with grilled beef, cheese, tomato jam, mustard mayo, pickle ($12.00).

The first thing that strikes me is the mustard mayo that’s overly generously slathered onto the burger and oozes out onto your hands and face whenever you take a bite. That’d have been fine if it was tasty, but unfortunately, the mustard was missing from the ‘mustard mayo’, so I’m left with just mayo. Funnily enough, the burger still tasted and smelled like a cheeseburger – one that was trying too hard to be gourmet. I couldn’t taste the tomato jam or the cheese, which usually bumps up the tastiness of almost anything. I’d have preferred to the beef cooked to medium rare, rather than medium.
Overall, a disappointing burger – the pulled pork and lamb burger on either side of me did look much tastier, though, without all the mayo. For a beef burger, The Burger Project is cheaper and tastier.

To wash it down, I get a salted caramel milkshake with heilala vanilla ($8.00). It has just the right saltiness and sweetness, but the size of it is probably a bit too rich to complement a burger.
