The collaboration between Peters Drumstick and Gelato Messina caught us by complete surprise in January when we spotted the minimalist boxes in the freezer section at our local Coles the evening before it was announced officially.
This here is one of my favourite flavours at Gelato Messina — salted coconut and mango salsa sorbet — turned into a cone: Peters Drumstick x Messina Mango & Salted Coconut.
It’s described as ‘Fresh Kensington Pride mango sorbet entwined with Murray River Salted Coconut sorbet, swirled with Kensington Pride Mango sauce and topped with toasted coconut flakes’. It contained 20% mango purée, 2.4% coconut milk powder and 0.7% desiccated coconut.
I’m a huge fan of the ribbons of mango sauce punctuating the salted coconut sorbet and this cone version does not disappoint and might even go beyond! The mango salsa and roasted coconut bring concentrated pops of the signature flavour in the first few bites, before reaching the cone that is filled side by side with mango and salted coconut sorbets. While the mango is not swirled through the coconut, the format balances the flavours beautifully and provides an opportunity to switch between the sweet mango and the salted coconut to appreciate their flavours alone. The gelato is smooth and creamy just like instore — there’s less air in the ice cream than usual Peters products — while the cone is crisp. The high quality of the ingredients used means these cones are not shy about having each flavour stand on its own.
