With Sri Lankan lamb rolls and Vietnamese pork rolls our usual go-to in Homebush West, it took a soggy weekend (the wettest since 1992) for us to walk on the opposite side of the road (the shortest distance to our car) and discover Best Tastes Dim Sim.
According to the news article posted outside its windows, the shop is well loved for its dumplings that some find ‘better than those they find at some of the best yum cha restaurants’. With somewhere to be that afternoon, we didn’t pick up any of the numerous frozen and handmade Hong-Kong style dumplings lining the freezers in the store, but we’re already itching to return for them!
Egg tarts ($1.60) are available only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They’re usually sold out by lunchtime, and we’re lucky enough to get one of the last few.
This is quite simply the best egg tart I can remember eating in Sydney. The pastry is light and flaky that is balanced impeccably with an egg custard that is smooth with a melt-in-the-mouth softness. The Eight and Emperor’s Garden Cake & Bakery in Haymarket both make a good egg tart, but even they do not compare.
In the mood for more sweets, this is the Red Bean Sesame Ball ($1.30).
The ball is crisp without the slightest oiliness that plagues most other versions of this, the red bean paste inside provides a soft and smooth contrast to the doughier, chewy pastry. All in all, this was enjoyable, although it paled in comparison to the egg tart.
There are other hot dim sims available including pork buns and siu main. We try their ham sui gok.
We liked the savoury mix of mushrooms with pork mince that contrasted well with the slight sweetness of the dough, which retained an enjoyable lightness despite its thickness.
