A week before Bean Code ended its lease inside Westfield Chatswood to reopen elsewhere after a break, we took the chance to enjoy one last drink: their signature Mountain Milk Tea ($7.70, no ice, 70% sweetness).
The drink had a soy pudding base that consisted of a third of the drink, topped with brown sugar tapioca pearls, and a high mountain oolong tea with soy milk. Consumed chilled, the notes of soy from the milk tea and pudding components came through at the head of each sip and dominated the sip with its earthy beany notes. Once the palate became accustomed to the soy flavour, the classic floral, sweet and milky notes of high mountain oolong teas became evident. While the sweetness of the drink was well restrained, the brown sugar pearls brought pops of chewy sweetness that contrasted with the smooth softness of the tofu pudding.
