This is the Kaneyoshi Seika Ika Sugata-yaki Senbei. It’s a rice cracker made from grilled squid legs, or ika sugatayaki.

Each cracker featured dimensions ranging from 5-7 cm in diameter at its widest and a thickness of 0.2-0.3 mm, accompanied by a moderately pungent seafood aroma. Upon tasting, the inclusion of the whole squid imparted a slightly fibrous and layered crunch, distinct from the snappier texture of the flour-based components within the cracker. This texture combined with the squid’s inherent taste to create a gratifyingly squid-centric flavour experience. Adding to this was the application of soy sauce on the cracker’s surface, introducing a delicate balance of stickiness, sweetness, and savouriness. While the enjoyment level was notably high, our personal preference still leaned toward shrimp as opposed to squid within rice crackers.
This Kaneyoshi Seika Ika Sugata-yaki Senbei contained 55 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2023.
