This is the Morinaga Hi-Chew Watermelon. It contained watermelon juice from concentrate and its centre had a crispy mouthfeel to emulate the refreshing crunch of watermelon.
Each candy piece measured approximately 2.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm, featuring a delicate pastel green exterior encompassing a pastel red centre adorned with white sugar crystals, exuding a sweet watermelon aroma. Upon tasting, the green outer layer imparted a subtle sweetness without any distinct watermelon flavour. Upon reaching the red interior, a gentle watermelon flavour emerged with the fruit’s natural sweetness. The sugar crystals, providing a crisp ‘zaku zaku’ texture, evoked the sensation of biting into a watermelon. Around mid-bite, as the sugar crystals dissolved, the natural watermelon flavour transitioned into an artificial chemical note that persisted into the finish. On the whole, while these candies adeptly recreated the textural experience of consuming fresh watermelon, the artificial undertone hindered the capturing of the fruit’s succulent natural sweetness.
This Morinaga Hi-Chew Watermelon contained 55 g (4.6 g x 12 pieces). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Australia in 2023.
