This is the Okinaya Kuri Hiroi, a monaka with chestnut inside.
The monaka came in charming packaging styled like traditional bamboo wrapping, evoking the feel of classic Japanese food presentation.
Measuring approximately 4.5 cm at its widest and tallest, the monaka consisted of two wafers shaped like a chestnut, with a hollow centre filled with anko and a whole candied chestnut.
On opening the package, the wafers released a toasted rice aroma. They were smooth and yielded with minimal resistance when bitten into—a softer texture than one might expect from a wafer but typical of prepackaged monaka, as the moisture from the filling affects the crispness. This softer texture was not unwelcome, as it paired well with the filling, maintaining the toasted rice notes at the start of each bite. These notes transitioned seamlessly into the richly sweet azuki filling, whose earthy nuttiness complemented the toasty nuttiness of the wafer. The candied chestnut, generously sized and distinct in flavour, introduced a contrasting firmer texture and helped balance the sweetness of the azuki, providing added depth.
Overall, this monaka delivered a delightful combination of textures and a well-balanced sweetness, with layers of nuttiness creating a complex and satisfying taste. Together with the adorable packaging, it would make an excellent choice for gifting.
