Asakusa Ichigoza, Tōkyō

Asakusa Ichigoza (lit. “Strawberry Seat”) is a specialty store dedicated to strawberry-themed sweets and drinks, which opened in Asakusa in May 2019.

Its offerings span an extensive beverage menu—ranging from milk-based smoothies and Japanese black tea to amazake and alcoholic drinks—as well as a selection of sweets, including warabimochi and daifuku.

Strawberry Smoothie with Japanese Black Tea (¥850)

The smoothie was thick, with a concentrated strawberry flavour that was both vivid and satisfying. The Japanese black tea provided a smooth, tannin-free base that elevated the natural fruitiness without introducing bitterness or astringency. The tea’s soft complexity added structure to the sweetness, creating a well-balanced, refreshing drink. Worthwhile and memorable.

Strawberry Amazake (¥700).

This was a bottled version of the house amazake, served hot and garnished with a fresh slice of strawberry. The flavour was intensely strawberry-forward, with a balanced sweetness and sourness, underpinned by the soft creaminess of sake kasu. Though almost uncomfortably hot when served, it would be ideally suited to colder seasons, offering both richness and warmth.

Overall, Asakusa Ichigoza is a compelling stop for strawberry lovers. The smoothie alone merits a return visit, and the evolving menu—including warabimochi and newer seasonal sweets since the last visit—offers strong incentive to explore further.

Asakusa Ichigoza is located in Shin Nakamise, 2 Chome-1 Asakusa, Taitō City, Tōkyō 111-0032, Japan
