This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Shimane Shinku Grapes, made with juice from Shimane Prefecture’s original Shinku grape variety. Known for low acidity, high sugar content, and an elegant sweet aroma, these large, seedless red grapes can be eaten with the skin on.
Each gummy was dome-shaped, about 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with an opaque pink-orange hue and a gentle grape fragrance. On tasting, the smooth surface gave way to a firm, bouncy chew from the outer gummy, which yielded to a softer, jelly-like core. The grape flavour began mellow and sweet, before the centre released a richer, more aromatic sweetness with restrained musky labrusca notes and minimal acidity. The finish was clean. Overall, they offered a fragrant, sweet flavour true to the Shinku grape, though one might prefer slightly more acidity for balance.
