Mamuki Bake Bar Oolong Hōjicha Cloud

This is the Oolong Hōjicha Cloud ($11.90) from Mamuki Bake Bar, featuring a sweetened oolong base topped with hōjicha cream.

The beverage presented with a layered structure: a deep brown base, a lighter semi-translucent middle, and a lighter opaque foam layer on top, finished with rose petals.

Initial contact delivered a pronounced syrupy sweetness, as the oolong and syrup had not been integrated. After stirring, while keeping the hōjicha foam intact, the sweetness remained dominant. The oolong base lacked body and definition, showing neither the floral-fruity lift of a lighter Taiwanese style nor the roasted, caramelised depth of a darker Chinese style, instead reading as diluted and sugar-led.

Through the mid-palate, the hōjicha cream provided the primary point of interest, with a smooth, creamy texture and a clear roasted profile. However, as the cream was also sweetened, its integration with the base compounded the overall sweetness rather than balancing it. The rose petals contributed visual detail but did not align with the flavour profile.

Towards the finish, the drink remained sugar-forward, with minimal tea structure to anchor it. The sweetness lingered without relief, and the components did not resolve into a cohesive profile.

Overall, a layered tea beverage with dominant sweetness, weak tea definition, and a creamy but equally sweet topping, resulting in a disjointed and unbalanced structure.

This Oolong Hōjicha Cloud was purchased from Mamuki Bake Bar in Sydney, Australia in April 2026.
