Kamakura Warabimochi Sakura Latte

This is the Sakura Latte (medium, $10.80, less ice) from Kamakura Warabimochi, a seasonal beverage featuring sakura-flavoured warabimochi, topped with a sakura latte, whipped cream, and pink cookie crumbs.

Stirred and consumed as intended, the flavour profile was dominated by an intense floral sweetness from the sakura in the latte base. This sweetness presented itself immediately and persisted throughout, resulting in a cloying, one-dimensional experience. While the sakura warabimochi added textural variation and a marginally different floral nuance, it was not sufficient to create contrast or depth.

In comparison, the matcha version of this beverage was notably more balanced. The vegetal bitterness of the matcha effectively tempered the floral sweetness of the warabimochi, offering greater complexity and drinkability. A small amount of salt—traditionally used in preserving sakura —may also have added the savoury counterpoint needed to lift and round out the flavour.

As it stands, this sakura latte lacked structural balance and was overly reliant on a singular sweet note. While visually appealing and seasonally appropriate, it is not one we would repurchase.

This Sakura Latte was purchased from Kamakura Warabimochi in Sydney, Australia in May 2025.
