During our university days, this Kang Shi Fu Rock Sugar Pear Juice used to be one of our favourite drinks. It was a common item stocked at almost all Chinese grocery stores in Sydney. But in recent years, it’s been increasingly difficult to find.
The juice is a translucent pale straw colour and a sweet nose of Ya pear or Chinese white pear. Ya pears have a similar flavour to nashi pears, although I find they tend to have a more watery flavour. Served chilled, those same fragrant Ya pear notes came through prominently in the head with a crisp mouthfeel. The sweetness developed with a clear flavour typical of rock sugar – there are no caramel notes as in regular sugar – to an intensity mid-sip that complements the fragrance of the pears well before finishing a lightly acidic, yet sweet pear aftertaste. This juice captured the crisp, fragrant flavour of Ya pears perfectly.
