This is the Asahi Calpis Soda Melon Cream Soda. Melon cream soda is a popular summertime drink in Japan that is essentially a carbonated melon-flavoured soda topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It contained 1% melon juice from concentrate.
The beverage was an opaque pale green colour (rather than the more yellow tone in the photo) with a sweet and creamy melon aroma and moderate carbonation. Served chilled, rounded notes of signature melon soda flavour — a milder, sweeter version of a green honeydew melon — came through at the head of each sip with a creamy, vanilla flavour developing in the body before a tangy acidity in the tail restrained the flavour from full-blown artificiality. The bubbles cleared the palate for a clean aftertaste.
The slightly acidic milky flavour of Calpis made it the perfect base for pairing with this nostalgic melon cream soda flavour. It was a refreshing drink for summer.
