Sun&Liv Yamagata x Nippon Yell Yamagata Obanazawa Watermelon Cider

This is the Sun&Liv Yamagata x Nippon Yell Yamagata Obanazawa Watermelon Cider, made with 30% juice from Obanazawa watermelons grown in Yamagata Prefecture, as well as guava juice.

According to JA Yamagata, the key to the exceptional sweetness of Obanazawa watermelons lies in Obanazawa’s location in Yamagata’s basin region, which experiences significant temperature differences between day and night. During the day, warm temperatures and abundant sunlight enhance photosynthesis, promoting nutrient production in the watermelon. At night, cooler temperatures slow the fruit’s respiration, allowing stored nutrients to convert into sugars rather than being expended.

The beverage had a translucent, vibrant red hue and a sweet aroma of fresh watermelon. Lightly carbonated, it was best consumed chilled, offering a flavour akin to freshly juiced watermelon at peak ripeness. A bright sweetness emerged at the start, followed by a fragrant, natural watermelon sweetness that lingered on the palate, likely enhanced by the guava juice. The carbonation added to the drink’s refreshing qualities while cleansing the palate for a clean aftertaste. Overall, this was a fruity, easy-to-drink cider with a high juice content that preserved the fresh taste of watermelon, making it one worth repurchasing.
