Located directly opposite Cabramatta train station, we visited A One Cake Shop hoping to find walnut cake but instead decided to try their Wife Cake.

Wife Cake ($3.00). This was approximately 7 cm in diameter and featured a substantial cookie crust, differing from the traditional flaky lard pastry.

The filling contained visible chunks of candied winter melon and roasted sesame seeds, with parts where the filling had burst through the crust, adding a pleasant caramelised chewiness. The crust-to-filling ratio leaned heavily towards the cookie, so the winter melon flavour, while present, did not dominate as it typically would. The filling also lacked the usual glutinous, chewy texture. This version didn’t attempt to replicate the classic version but stood as its own take.
