Hominy Bakery, Katoomba

This is Hominy Bakery, located along the main road in Katoomba, with shelves stocked with a range of baked goods.

2016

The bakery stocked organic sourdough and yeasted breads, alongside cakes and pastries.

Little Apple Pie ($2.95)

The apple pie had a crisp, sugared crust that provided a satisfying crunch against the soft, sweet apple filling.

Pear Danish ($2.60)

This featured a cube of baked pear encased in crisp, flaky pastry, although the overall result was unremarkable.

Pear & Apple Cake ($3.90)

The cake was somewhat dense and overly sweet, with cubes of pear and apple alongside raisins.

Apple & Rhubarb Turnover ($3.55)

The turnover featured the same sugared pastry top, delivering a satisfying crunch against the soft filling. Rhubarb introduced a pleasant tartness that balanced the sweetness of the apple.

2026

We returned in 2026, after visiting Black Cockatoo Bakery further up the road.

Butter Croissant ($6.00)

This was an unremarkable croissant, with a rather dense centre and little of the rich, buttery flavour or tender interior expected of the pastry. Although the exterior was well browned and baked through, the interior lacked the lightness needed to make it satisfying.

Apple Cinnamon Danish ($6.60)

This featured laminated pastry with cinnamon and apple. The apple was overcooked to the point of mushiness, lacking freshness and bite. While the exterior retained some crispness, moisture from the filling softened the centre, leaving it more bready than flaky. The cinnamon was enjoyable, but the pastry lacked the textural contrast that a cinnamon-sugar finish might have provided.

Overall, this bakery’s products were defined by an emphasis on familiar fruit-filled pastries, but execution was inconsistent across the two visits. The 2016 apple pie and apple-rhubarb turnover offered satisfying contrasts between crisp, sugared pastry and soft fruit, whereas the 2026 croissant and apple cinnamon Danish lacked the textural finesse and flavour development expected at their price points. While Hominy Bakery may have been one of our preferred bakeries in 2016, the latest visit fell short of Black Cockatoo Bakery in both execution and flavour.

Hominy Bakery is located at 185 Katoomba St, Katoomba NSW 2780.
