With our usual bakery for egg tarts in Burwood closed for the Lunar New Year period, we came across Maria’s Bakery Inn, located further north on Burwood Rd.

A small Cantonese-style bakery, it offers the typical selection of breads and pastries one would expect.

Egg Tart ($5.20 for pack of 2).
The thin, buttery shortcrust pastry was enjoyable, but the egg custard had an unusually fluorescent yellow hue throughout, rather than the typical paler yellow interior. The texture was somewhat loose, and the flavour was overly sweet, with a taste reminiscent of egg powder rather than fresh eggs, lacking a distinct egg-forward flavour.

Dry Melon Cake ($4.20), or Wife Cake.
With a hefty size (approximately 10 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick), it initially seemed promising. However, the filling contained too much desiccated coconut and very little candied winter melon, resulting in a lack of flavour and texture contrast. The pastry also lacked the flakiness expected from a lard-based dough, instead having a dense texture.
While neither item was particularly noteworthy, we are still glad to have tried them.
Maria’s Bakery Inn is located at 240 Burwood Rd, Burwood NSW 2134.
