Ohmo, Auckland

This is Ohmo, a Korean bakery in Auckland specialising in salt bread.

Salt Bread ($4.50)

The bread presented with a browned exterior and visible coarse salt scattered across the upper surface. The base appeared more deeply browned and crisped from butter contact during baking.

Initial contact delivered a firm, crispy, and crunchy crust across both the surface and underside, which yielded into a softer and more tender interior crumb. Through the mid-palate, the crumb carried a mellow buttery richness, though noticeably more restrained than many of the richer salt breads commonly found in Sydney. The coarse salt crystals provided concentrated bursts of salinity that lifted and reinforced the Maillard-driven toasted flavours of the crust without becoming overwhelmingly salty. Texture remained the stronger element overall, with the crisp underside contributing most of the enjoyment. Finish resolved into lingering buttery toast notes with restrained saltiness and minimal oiliness.

In addition to the original version, Ohmo also offered filled variations including whipped cream and strawberry, corn and cheese, and red bean and butter. Given the bakery’s focus on salt bread itself, the plain version functioned effectively as the clearest baseline expression of the product.

Overall, Ohmo is enjoyable and technically competent, though less rich and less distinctive than stronger salt bread examples currently available in Sydney.

Ohmo is located at Shop 5, Strand Arcade, 233 Queen Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand.
