The suburb of Blacktown is well known for its high concentration of Filipinos, so we took advantage of a recent trip there to enjoy some Filipino food at Angel’s Filipino Barbeque.

The dine-in aspect of the restaurant works very much like fast food. Customers pick up a short menu from the counter and order before taking a seat. Food is slow to arrive (despite the relative lack of customers) but they bring the food to the table.

Fried Tilapia ($13.00).
This fried fish turned out to be our favourite dish. It was fried whole, giving it an audibly crispy exterior. The interior was a touch on the dry side, but it went well with the soy and onion sauce.

Sizzling Sisig ($16.00).
Sisig is made from parts of a pig’s face and belly and chicken liver seasoned with calamansi, onions, and chilli peppers. I’ve never quite understood the appeal of sisig and this version did nothing to convince me otherwise. That said, the lemon went a fair way to cutting through the heaviness of the dish.

Lechon Kawali ($16.00).
The pork belly was crispy, but very dry. Notes of honey were prominent in the sweet liver sauce, which went some way to adding moisture to the dry pork belly.

Garlic Rice ($4.00). Garlic rice never failed us and here it was garlicky without being oily.
We were most pleased with the fried tilapia but not so much as to return to Angel’s Filipino Barbecue given the small portion sizes. We would, however, be open to visiting more Filipino restaurants.
Angel’s Filipino Barbeque is located at 122B Main St, Blacktown NSW 2148.
