Numerous restaurants that had previously centred their focus on suburbs closer to the CBD have now established new homes at Macquarie Centre. Notable among these are Dopa Donburi and Milk Bar and Camy’s Chargrill Chicken. With previous stores in Green Square, Mascot and Surry Hills, we took the opportunity to try this inner-city fare closer to home.
Camy’s Wings with Camy’s Famous Sweet Chilli Sauce (15 for $21.90)
These wings were truly a textural delight – boasting an exceptional level of crunchiness and crispiness. The coating, even when coupled with the sauce, managed to maintain a texture akin to caramelized sugar crunch, albeit without an overwhelming sweetness. The tender and juicy chicken within provided a satisfying contrast. The infusion of sweet chilli sauce and sesame imparted an unmistakably Asian flair, evoking reminiscences of spring rolls accompanied by sweet chilli sauce. Our sole lamentation was the distribution of wingettes and drumettes – out of the 15 pieces, we received only 3 wingettes. In this regard, we hold establishments such as Nene Chicken in high regard, where a consistent ratio of wingettes to drumettes is maintained.
Half Chicken ($10.90), described as a rotisserie-cooked half Lilydale free-range chargrilled chicken.
Returning for a second visit, our intention was to try their primary focus – the chargrilled chicken. The chicken had crispy skin enveloping a juicy interior. However, we were met with disappointment as it was served lukewarm and lacked the pronounced smoky flavour we had anticipated.
Tropicano ($14.90), described as ‘a taste of the tropics’ with chargrilled chicken, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, juicy pineapple and whole egg mayo.
The burger’s chicken breast was grilled to order, ensuring a piping hot serving. Regrettably, the smokiness we sought was once again missing. Nonetheless, the burger found its flavour predominantly in the bacon and cheddar cheese. The lettuce retained its fresh and crisp quality, and the thick and juicy pineapple was a notable addition, though falling short of the desired level of grilling.
In summation, the highlight of the three offerings was undoubtedly the crispy wings, embodying a delightful combination of textures. However, when considering both pricing and flavour, we find ourselves favouring the fried wings at Nene Chicken.
