Frango Charcoal Chicken, Bella Vista

Always up for some good chicken, we headed to Frango Charcoal Chicken after stumbling across an article on the top chicken places in Sydney. According to their website, they ‘blend the spices of […] Angola and the traditional charcoal techniques from Portugal. Opened in 1992, in the heart of the Portuguese capital of Sydney (Petersham)’, they have since expanded across Sydney. We visited their Bella Vista branch.

This is their whole chicken with their secret recipe Piri Piri Chilli sauce ($16.50). The chicken has a salty skin that’s infused with a moreish smokiness from the charcoal flame, while the meat itself is very succulent. It’s not often that fast food chicken jumps out at us for being juicy, but this one of the rare few that did. The sauce adds a gentle tanginess and subtle heat that kept it tasty and sticky without overwhelming.

And these were a side of large chips with chicken salt ($9.00). Compared to the chicken, the chips were very ordinary, tasting like regular shoestring fries.

We enjoyed the chicken at Frango Charcoal Chicken. While we wouldn’t go 20 minutes out of way to visit regularly, given the comparative proximity of other chicken joints like El Jannah, we’d be delighted to eat it any day if there were a closer location.

Frango Charcoal Chicken is located at 5/29-31 Lexington Dr, Bella Vista NSW 2153.
