Fukufuku-ya is a traditional izakaya located on the bottom floor of the Toyoko Inn Hirosaki Ekimae.

The setting features tatami rooms and a shoes-off policy, with lockers and slippers provided for comfort. The menu leans into familiar izakaya fare, with some regional and seasonal offerings, served in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Otōshi – Mackerel and Pickled Cucumber
The obligatory appetiser featured oily mackerel paired with crisp, tangy pickled cucumber. A well-balanced combination, with the richness of the fish offset by the acidity and freshness of the pickle.

Special Horse Meat Sashimi – Three Varieties (¥1,538)
This trio included akami (lean red meat, firm and slightly chewy), futaego (a belly cut with layered fat and meat, offering a chewy yet clean flavour), and sakura uma toro (minced blend of lean and fatty meat in yukhoe style, visually striking and texturally akin to fatty tuna). While the dish was well-prepared and enjoyable, it lacked the refinement found at Kumamoto’s specialist horse restaurants such as, Suganoya.

Nagano Shine Muscat Sour (¥471)
Bright and clean with a clear shine muscat grape character. The sweetness was balanced, and the alcohol undetectable—an easy-drinking and dangerously approachable cocktail.

Creamy Cheese Yakisoba Omelet (¥713)
A simple yet well-executed dish. The egg was soft and fluffy, and the melted cheese added richness without overwhelming the well-seasoned noodles. Not especially memorable, but enjoyable.

Charcoal Grilled Skewer Assortment – 6 types (¥1,087)
From left to right: gizzard, thigh, tail, skin, neck, and chicken mince. The highlights were the chicken tail, thigh, and skin for their juicy, fatty tenderness. The charcoal grilling imparted a pleasant smokiness throughout. The mince had the texture of a loose chicken patty and was mildly seasoned.

Tuna Tataki & Avocado with Fresh Yuba Spring Rolls
Soft and creamy from the minced tuna and avocado, contrasted with the crunch of cucumber. The onion was subtle, but the wasabi added a bright aromatic note that lifted the dish. Balanced and texturally pleasing.

Charcoal Grilled Atka Mackerel (¥878)
Well-grilled with a juicy interior and a lightly salted, flavourful exterior. A satisfying and dependable protein option.

Fukufuku-ya offers a comfortable izakaya experience with thoughtful execution across a broad menu. The horse meat sashimi was a highlight for novelty, while the skewers and grilled fish delivered the warmth of familiar charcoal-grilled fare. Conveniently located near Hirosaki Station, it is a solid option for a casual, satisfying meal with a few regional touches.
