Hong Kong Cafe boasts of having one of Sydney’s most diverse menus for Hong Kong food.
The interior is decorated with murals and architecture to transport you to Hong Kong.
Stir-Fried Kway Teow ($15.80).
With this being one of D’s favourite dishes, we tend to determine the calibre of a restaurant by how well it captured the wok hei in its stir-fried dishes. This one had a fragrant smokiness that disappeared on tasting, alas. That aside, the noodles had an enjoyable al dente bite, although there was a distinct lack of prawns or char siu in comparison to the noodles. We’d give this one a miss.
Stir-Fried Shredded Duck Shanghai Noodle ($17.80)
This dish did not capture the wok hei either and was further let down by the oiliness left around one’s mouth after every bite, while the noodles themselves were doughy and carried little flavour. The shredded duck was enjoyable and the cabbage added crunch but was insufficient to redeem the oiliness of the dish.
We also ordered a Cold Honey Pomelo ($6.50), which was not pomelo at all and instead a non-carbonated, watery yuzu-ade made from not nearly enough yuzu marmalade.
Overall, despite its seeming popularity Hong Kong Cafe was not impressive and quite disappointing.
