Losing power is stressful. It’s especially so when it occurs twice in less than 48 hours during a hot and humid period and doesn’t get restored for over 24 hours. We were slowly going insane and even seriously considering buying a generator, but managed to distract ourselves by visiting shopping centres with both air-conditioning and hot food. At this point, we just wanted food, so ate at Jim’s Malaysia in the food court instead of heading upstairs to join the queues outside PappaRich upstairs at Macquarie Centre.
This is Jim’s Stir Fry Pipi ($18.80), with black bean sauce (other choices include garlic pepper, sambal sauce, black pepper, chilli jam and ginger & shallot) and a serve of plain rice. We’re impressed with the serving size of the pipis with only one or two having sand in them.
D tries their Wad Tan Hor ($14.80).
While it uses the wide flat noodle we’re used to, we’re disappointed that they mixed in thin noodles, which simply didn’t have the same mouthfeel or soaked up as much flavour. That said, the dish did taste a bit flat, lacking the fiery wok hei that usually makes this dish so tasty.
Finally, this is the Longan Ice ($4.80), which tasted much like sugar water with canned longans. It lacked the smokey longan flavour of the one from Ho Jiak.
While the pipis were enjoyable, Jim’s Malaysia seems to confirm that we should stick to our usual habit of eating at the main fast food outlets at food courts and leaving Malaysian food for restaurants, which are comparable in price.
