At the annual Chatswood StreetFair, Bite by Bite introduced its ‘Asian-inspired, Japanese-style’ cream doughnuts under the name Halo b.
Uji Hōjicha Donut ($6.00)
The doughnut itself was somewhat unremarkable, with a dense, eggy, brioche-like texture, but fortunately not dry. The cream filling was thick and rich, delivering a strong hōjicha flavour, though the whipped cream base was quite prominent. It would have been more enjoyable as a custard. The kinako dusting on top enhanced the nuttiness of the hōjicha, but overall, this doughnut was not one we’d return for, nor did it inspire us to try their other offerings.
