N and I were excited by the opening of Kurtosh in Darling Square because finally, we could eat their eggplant bureka more often. Or so we thought: unfortunately, a convenient location it may be, but there was no sight of the eggplant bureka on the multiple occasions we walked past. Talk about a let down.

We’re not a fan of their slab cakes, but second to the bureka on our list is their kürtőskalács. This is their Caramelised Hazelnut Kurtosh ($8.50), which we’ve enjoyed in the past.

This one from Darling Square did not compare to our previous experiences with the kürtőskalács from Kurtosh. In appearance, the number of strips spun in the kurtosh were far fewer and much wider, while the thickness of the strips were also thinner. These minor differences threw off the balanced sweetness of the kürtőskalács, which lost its moreish tender innards that used to contrast so well with the now overwhelming sugar glaze and caramelised hazelnut (that were also poorly distributed compared to previous visits).
We’re disappointed by Kurtosh in Darling Square, but we’re hoping it’s early teething issues rather than a permanent cost-cutting measure.
Kurtosh is located at 18 Nicolle Walk, Haymarket NSW 2000.
