This masterpost serves as a reference framework to calibrate the sensory characteristics of different berry varieties. Where varietal identification is unavailable, assessment relies on observable physical and flavour markers.
- A 5.0 for taste requires not only high sweetness and clarity of flavour, but additional defining characteristics (e.g. floral or aromatic lift) that distinguish the fruit from standard profiles.
- A 5.0 for texture requires a firm structure that yields cleanly into a soft, juicy interior.
Kiwifruit
ENZARed

Appearance: A red-centred variant of golden kiwifruit, with a distinct “iris” of red at the core surrounded by yellow flesh. The exterior is smooth and bronze-toned, with minimal hair compared to green kiwifruit.
Taste: 5.0 — The yellow flesh carried the expected sweet, aromatic profile of golden kiwifruit. The red centre introduced a concentrated, berry-like sweetness with a more pronounced aromatic lift. This contrast sharpened the underlying acidity of the surrounding flesh, resulting in a fresher, more layered profile with a light tropical finish. Texture: 5.0 — Flesh remained firm but yielded cleanly under pressure, transitioning quickly into a smooth, melting consistency.
Zespri Ruby Red

Appearance: Fully saturated red flesh throughout, with a deeper hue than ENZARed and a more uniform colour distribution. Developed in New Zealand.
Taste: 4.5 — The flavour was consistently berry-forward across the entire fruit. Darker sections carried a denser, jam-like sweetness with reduced acidity. The usual kiwifruit tartness was largely absent, replaced by a softer, more rounded sweetness. Texture: 5.0 — Firm structure with immediate yielding, maintaining a smooth, cohesive mouthfeel.
Zespri SunGold

This is the SunGold, a jumbo golden kiwifruit developed by Zespri in New Zealand.
Appearance: Large golden kiwifruit with bright yellow flesh and minimal surface hair.
Taste: 4.5 — Sweet and aromatic, though with reduced acidity. The absence of a sharper tart element limited contrast, resulting in a more linear sweetness compared to green varieties. Texture: 5.0 — Consistently firm with a clean, spoonable yield and smooth finish.
Kiwiberry

Appearance: Small, grape-sized fruit (approximately 3–3.5 cm), with smooth green skin lacking the fibrous exterior of standard kiwifruit.
Taste: 5.0 — Immediate sweetness resembling golden kiwifruit, followed by a secondary note of ripe banana as the flesh broke down. The skin introduced a faint sourness towards the finish, similar to plum skin, adding contrast to the sweetness.
Texture: 4.0 — Flesh softened quickly and cleanly, though the skin remained slightly leathery and lingered after the interior had dissolved.
Strawberry
Bellini

Appearance: Uniform red exterior with a glossy surface and defined seeds.
Taste: 5.0 — Concentrated strawberry flavour with balanced sweetness and acidity. The profile remained stable across the fruit without dilution. Texture: 5.0 — Crisp initial bite transitioning into a juicy interior, maintaining structural integrity without softness or collapse.
