This is the Fresh Fodder Babaganoush Smoky Eggplant, made primarily of 56% eggplant, along with white beans and tahini, and seasoned with lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and cumin.
The dip had a beige, off-white colour speckled with black and red bits, and a pronounced smoky aroma. The texture was smooth, similar to a bean paste, with the eggplant fully blended into the white beans for a uniform consistency. However, the presence of white beans was noticeable, adding a grittiness to the mouthfeel. While the eggplant didn’t provide a chunky texture, its smoky flavour came through clearly, enhanced by a savoury garlic undertone and the nuttiness of tahini. Some pieces of pepper and cumin were too strong, occasionally introducing a bitterness when paired with lighter items like cucumber.
Overall, though we weren’t keen on the inclusion of white beans, the flavour was enjoyable enough to repurchase—though we still preferred the original Aldi Deli Originals Fresh Mediterranean Style Dip Eggplant, which was unfortunately discontinued and replaced by this ‘limited edition’ Fresh Fodder version.
