Crispy salmon skin seems like the healthier version of potato chips with its high protein and low carb content. We picked up this bag of Fujiya Honten Salmon Skin Snack from Curb Market in Sapporo, Hokkaidō.
This brand of salmon skin snack won the top award at a ‘Best New Hokkaidō Souvenirs’ competition in 2010, so it had some expectations to live up to!
The thin sheets of salmon skin are deep-fried.
They puff up like tempura crackers with a golden brown colour and strong smell of salmon.
The fried salmon skins have the same flavour as the smell: it has the strong, concentrated flavour of salmon with little reliance on salt. The texture, though, is unexpected. It’s not at all oily and in fact, taste rather dry. They’re also very crispy but not crumbly at all like tempura crackers, with each piece requiring more effort to bite through than a thick-cut potato chip. Overall, these were enjoyable snacks that would be great for pairing with alcohol, but not particularly something to enjoy on its own.
