Mantovani Panettone Traditional Fruit

Panettone is an Italian type of sweet bread that’s usually enjoyed during the Christmas/New Year period.

It has a cupola shape that extends from a cylindrical base and is about 12 cm high. This traditional version is ‘made with butter (10%) and filled with juicy sultanas (15%) and candied orange peel (12%)’.

The panettone has a very piquant spiced aroma and a somewhat firm outer crust. Upon tasting the bread component has a similar flavour and texture to an eggy brioche, with the addition of the raisins veering the experience into a hot cross bun made with a brioche base, adding just enough sweetness and moisture to the brioche. The candied orange peel, though, was not something we enjoyed at all, with its sharp and zesty quality drawing on heavily spiced memories of Christmas pudding and fruit cake for which we’re not keen for the same reason. Overall, we would be open to trying a less traditional flavour.

This Mantovani Panettone Traditional Fruit contained 750 g. It was produced in Italy and received as a gift from acquaintances from Sydney, Australia in 2020.
