This is the Aldi Choceur Fine Chocolate Mint Thins. We purchased these for comparison because they were were also produced in Germany, the same country where After Eight is produced for the Australian market. They contained wafers of peppermint fondant (49%) covered in dark chocolate (51%).
Within each box were 30 mint wafers, each measuring approximately 3 x 5 x 0.5 cm and individually wrapped in paper sachets.
The chocolate coating in these wafers proved to be double the thickness of an After Eight, becoming the initial and substantial flavor upon hitting the palate. The wafer, however, did not provide the same clean bite-through experience, as the thicker chocolate shattered upon biting. Unlike After Eight, where mint dominates from start to finish, in these wafers, the mint flavor only emerged mid-bite. It persisted until the finish, where the mint receded, giving way to the pronounced flavor of sugar syrup as the remaining chocolate melted on the palate. While not unenjoyable, a direct comparison of the overall execution of textures and flavors in these mint chocolates underscores why After Eight has maintained its status as the iconic after-dinner mint.
