Milk Caramels are one of the first products released by Morinaga in 1913 and they’ve remained Japan’s best-selling caramel since. The original flavour was made with a traditional recipe of sugar, butter and sweetened condensed milk for an authentic caramel flavour and texture. Recent years have seen different flavours of the caramels emerging, including this Morinaga Caramel Matcha.
Milk caramels have continued to use their original packaging throughout history when sold in Japan.
These Matcha Caramels are made for a Western consumer with English on the packaging, but adopt the same format of a tray holding 12 pieces of caramels.
Each caramel is 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x 1 cm in size.
The caramel has a sweet, dairy matcha smell with a matcha green colour. The texture is soft with a bright and sweet matcha latte flavour from the first bite. the matcha flavour intensifies in flavour with a creaminess by mid-bite and persisted throughout the chew, leaving a slightly bitter finish like matcha, leaving a sweet and clean aftertaste. Pleasantly the caramel does not stick to your teeth, making for an enjoyable caramel without the teeth rotting sweetness that lingered on the palate with many other caramels.
This Morinaga Caramel Matcha contained 56 g or 12 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2017.
