Rumour has it that rocky road originated from the mid-1850s in Australia as a way to sell confectionery that had spoiled during the long trip from Europe. Mixed with nuts and cheap chocolate to disguise the spoiled flavour, it’s now a mainstay made with fresh ingredients. The Three Chocolatiers Rocky Road whet our appetite, but we weren’t entirely satisfied so we returned for a more established brand with this Darrell Lea Milk Chocolate Rocklea Road.
It’s made with ‘fluffy marshmallow (25%), peanuts (7%) and coconut (9%)’ and covered in ‘smooth milk chocolate (58%)’.
For someone who’s petite, the chunkiness of the rocky road is a real consideration. Here, though, the ratio of milk chocolate to marshmallow, coconut and peanuts is spot on. There’s just enough to hold the ingredients together and give a rich chocolate and coconut flavour in every bite, while fluffiness of the marshmallows keeps each mouthful soft enough to bite through with minimal effort. That’s probably at the expense of fewer peanuts, though as we found bites without peanuts more often than not. Overall, though, it’s a tasty rocky road and it’s easy to see why this is a longstanding favourite.
