Nestlé KitKat Wasabi is a limited edition for the Shizuoka region in central Japan using wasabi from Tamaruya Honten. Shizuoka is the birthplace of wasabi, which is best known as the hot green paste accompanying sushi and sashimi. It’s highly pungent so a small dab goes a long way. Unlike chilli peppers that give a burning sensation on the tongue, wasabi produces vapours that stimulate the nasal passages.
The KitKat is a wasabi-flavoured cream sandwiched between wafers, then enrobed in wasabi-flavoured white chocolate.
This is one of the more adventurous flavours of KitKat, but it’s also one I enjoy immensely. There is a very noticeable wasabi flavour and smell, but its hotness is very mild – the sweetness of the white chocolate counters this well. I was concerned that the wasabi would be overwhelmingly hot, but this KitKat is perfect for those who love sweets but enjoy wasabi only in moderation. The wasabi also gave the white chocolate a beautiful light green colour.
The box of Nestlé KitKat Wasabi contained 12 mini bars. It is a limited edition for the region of Shizuoka and manufactured in Japan and was purchased in Tōkyō, Japan in 2014.
