Growing up, the blackcurrant flavour was always the favourite whenever we had a roll of the pastilles. In recent years, they’ve come out with rolls with just blackcurrant flavour that we thoroughly enjoyed, but these Life Savers Blackcurrant Pastilles go beyond by being a whole bag dedicated to this favourite.
Each pastille was a deep purple-black colour, covered in sugar crystals, and 1.6 cm in diameter and 0.8 cm in height.
The pastilles had a sweet blackcurrant aroma and the sugar crystal coating gave each pastille a very firm — almost hard — exterior. Upon tasting, though, the hard coating brought an initial sweetness before giving way very easily to the soft centre within. Chewing the pastille released a rich blackcurrant flavour that burst through stronger on each subsequent bite, with an acidity that captured the fresh fruit and restrained the sweetness of the exterior.
