This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Akita Hokugen Peach, made with juice from peaches grown in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. While the label “northernmost” may suggest the geographical edge of peach cultivation, Hokugen Momo is in fact a designated brand name. It refers not to latitude but to the exceptionally late shipping season of peaches in this region—one of the last in Japan’s market calendar—reflecting the care and pride of the local producers.
Each gummy was a soft, opaque yellow, measuring approximately 2 cm across and 1 cm in height. The surface was coated in sugar crystals, which gave a brief crunch before yielding to a firm, elastic exterior and a soft, jelly-like centre. The white peach flavour developed in stages: beginning with a floral, dewy sweetness, followed by a gradual deepening of taste as the jelly core released more nuanced fruit notes. There was a subtle acidity present in the outer layer, which lifted the finish and balanced the richness of the interior. The result was a mellow, aromatic sweetness that highlighted the refined, floral profile of the Hokugen peaches—less assertive than the vibrant Akatsuki variety from Fukushima, but distinctive in its own right.
