Garigari-kun is Japan’s most well-known popsicle brand with the blue-coloured soda flavour being particularly popular. They feature a hard shell encasing crunchy flavoured shaved ice. This one here was the Akagi Garigari-kun Grapefruit.

The popsicle contained grapefruit juice (5%) with a crisp outer shell concealing a grapefruit-flavoured shaved ice centre. The popsicle had broken in half as I pulled the stick out of the packaging. Nonetheless, the grapefruit flavour was evident from the start of each bite as a sweet pomelo-like flavour without the defining tartness or bitterness of the fresh fruit itself. There was no hint of the tingly tongue sensation that I usually experience with citrus-flavoured foods nor any salivating acidity. We’d have enjoyed a bolder, unapologetic grapefruit flavour, yet still enjoyed the crunchy kakigōri-type texture of the centre.
This Akagi Garigari-kun Grapefruit contained 105 mL. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2022.
