Wahoken Houjicha Funmatsucha

This Wahoken Houjicha Funmatsucha is the last of the three coarsely ground teas we picked up from their store in Kagoshima.

The tea consisted of a ground houjicha or roasted green tea.

Prepared using 1.5 g of powder stirred in 200 mL of water (80°C or room temperature), the tea dissolves easily to an opaque brown-black colour with a smoky aroma. At the head of each sip, the tea has a slightly viscous mouthfeel with smoky notes of houjicha coming through and developing in richness in the body with a natural sweetness before a clean finish with no bitterness or astringency. While the powdered houjicha leaves a slight residue on the palate in the aftertaste and the colour of the tea was an unappealing murky brown colour, the rich smoky flavours of houjicha are captured well by this tea.

This Wahoken Houjicha Funmatsucha contained 30 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Kagoshima, Japan in 2019.
