The Darrell Lea Soft Eating Liquorice Strawberry and Apple Flavour impressed us sufficiently for us to try these new Darrell Lea Rippers Blackcurrant and Green Apple that were released shortly after the new year.

Each ‘ripper’ is about 10 cm in length with a 1 cm diameter and consist of four 5 mm strands twisted together. The packaging encourages twisting, bending and bending each piece for maximum fun. It does require some force to rip each strand off but it is quite fun, indeed.

The green apple flavour was an opaque bright green colour with a faint sweet aroma. It’s an identical flavour to the apple flavoured soft eating liquorice with the difference being in the texture. These skinnier ‘rippers’ are a quarter of the size of the former, which results in a drier and firmer mouthfeel, and despite being still softer, recalled the plasticky Twizzlers. Unfortunately eating the four strands together does not recreate the softer mouthfeel of the soft eating liquorice.

The blackcurrant flavour was an opaque purple colour with a fruity aroma and similar texture. That said, the punchier blackcurrant flavour holds its own against the firmer and drier texture than the apple. It came through immediately on biting with the gentle acidity, aromatic floral sweetness and hint of bitterness that characterises the fruit.

While we prefer the format of the soft eating liquorice, we do enjoy the fruity flavours.
