This is the Hagoromo Sweet Chesnut Zenzai. Zenzai is a sweet soup made from boiling Kazuki beans with sugar and salt. This one also featured peeled sweet chestnuts.

The soup is prepared by heating the contents of the package in the microwave at 500-600W for 1.5 minutes, which gave a sweet azuki aroma. Served hot, the soup has a viscous consistency — the thickness you expect from cornstarch-based soups — and is not as thick as homemade zenzai. A sugary sweetness — the soup is 24.4% sugar — dominates the flavour and is relieved by the whole azuki beans and the plump and tender chestnuts, which are chunky and make up 2 whole chestnuts. Overall, the chestnuts are the highlight of the soup and adding our own chestnuts to a homemade zenzai where we can adjust the consistency and sweetness would be more enjoyable.
This Hagoromo Sweet Chestnut Zenzai contained 140 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2021.
