Sticky date pudding is one of my favourite desserts. D introduced it to me many years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. One of my favourite things to do is to eat hot sticky date pudding with a side of vanilla ice cream. Except only Sara Lee makes family-sized portions of sticky date pudding in Sydney, so it’s almost never on sale – there’s no competition so what’s the point?

A couple of weeks ago, though, I spied something else with sticky date pudding on its packaging in the freezer section: Harry’s Ice Cream Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Ripple & Fudge Pieces. 

I was excited to try this. Turns out, though, that sticky date pudding flavoured food will be unlikely to ever match the actual food itself. That is, it doesn’t really taste like sticky date pudding at all, just the sauce you drizzle on top.

But if you considered it just a toffee ripple and fudge ice cream, then you have yourself a pretty decent tub. You can’t skimp on caramel or toffee flavoured ice cream, because the cheap stuff tastes terrible. (My all time favourite is Killinchy Gold’s Gold Rock Hokey Pokey Ice Cream from New Zealand.)

As a toffee ripple and fudge ice cream, it was very generous with the fudge pieces and very sweet. In fact, it was so sweet that, even for a 500mL tub, D and I had to split it over three servings. We have a pretty sweet tooth to begin with, so we’d probably enjoy it more if it were less sweet. And if there were actual bits of the sticky date pudding itself, which the ice cream seemed to forget about, in addition to the caramel sauce you usually drizzle on top.
