Casahana Elegance 2B Green Tea Milk & Espresso Chestnut Mooncakes

This Casahana Elegance 2B is the last of the mooncakes we ate for 2020.

Each tin contained the Green Tea Milk (left) and Espresso Chestnut (right) mooncakes.

Green Tea Milk

The Green Tea Milk has a springtime pattern with a butterfly amongst flowers and consisted of a green tea flavoured lotus paste with a centre of milk cream.

The mooncake has a gently vegetal aroma, which came through at the head of each bite with an enjoyable gentle grassy note before the sweetness of the rich lotus seed base rounds out the flavour ahead of the creamy, milky centre. The combination of the vegetal notes — which are enjoyably natural and taste more like matcha than the artificial sweetness of other green tea mooncakes, rich sweetness and milky creaminess creates an overall bite that recalled a green tea latte. While we enjoy the sum of the parts, the milky centre on its own has an offputting milkiness.

Espresso Chestnut

The Espresso Chestnut consisted of a coffee flavoured lotus paste with crisp almond shards and a chestnut mung bean filling.

The mooncake has a subtle coffee aroma, which on tasting, lends a rich flavour and gentle bitterness that cut through the sweetness of the lotus paste well along with the lighter, unsweetened warm nuttiness of the chestnut centre. The slight bitterness of coffee, which is rich but not dominating, finished the bite for an aftertaste without the lingering sweetness of usual mooncakes, while the almond brought the textural interest to the otherwise smooth mouthfeel making for a well-balanced mooncake in terms of taste and textures.

This Casahana Elegance 2B Green Tea Milk & Espresso Chestnut Mooncakes contained 2 mooncakes each 170 g. It was produced in Malaysia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2020.
