Taiban Mini Snowy Moon Cake with Red Bean and Nishio Matcha Bean Paste

This is the Taiban Mini Snowy Moon Cake with Red Bean and Nishio Matcha Bean Paste.

As a snowy mooncake, the mooncake has a skin made from glutinous rice flour, while the innards are made up of mung bean paste (22%), white kidney bean paste (22%), red bean (3.4%) and nishio matcha powder (1%). Each mini mooncake is about 5 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm in height.

The mooncake is soft to the touch and has a sweet aroma. Upon tasting, the soft skin is flavourless and gave way to a very thick matcha flavoured bean paste that has an odd fruitiness that masks any of the natural vegetal and grassy notes that characterise matcha and green tea generally. The red beans are speckled throughout but the sheer thickness and odd sweetness of the bean paste mean that they do not add their own texture or flavour. After singing our praises for their black sesame version, we’re very disappointed with this one.

This Taiban Mini Snowy Moon Cake with Red Bean and Nishio Matcha Bean Paste contained 110 g or 2 pieces. It was produced in Hong Kong and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2020.
