Kaneka Foods x JA Wakayama Unshū Mikan Gumi

This is the Kaneka Foods x JA Wakayama Unshū Mikan Gumi. It used juice from unshū mikan from Wakayama Prefecture, a region blessed with a warm climate, moderate rainfall, and sea breeze from the Kuroshio Current. It contained 2.4 billion CFUs of labre lactic acid bacteria.

Each piece was an opaque orange hue, measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, and emitted a sweet, zesty mandarin aroma. On tasting, the exterior gummy had a bouncy resistance of about 3 out of 5 on the Meiji softness to hardness scale, delivering a prominent citrus oil flavour with a fleeting hint of zesty bitterness. This exterior quickly gave way to the jelly centre, which immediately released a fresh mikan juice flavour with a mellow sweetness, developing a rich acidity mid-bite to add juicy depth. The gummy exterior prolonged the chew time of the jelly centre, capturing the essence of unshū mikan with balanced sweetness, rich acidity, and a subtle zestiness that left a slight tingle on the tongue from the citrus oils.

However, despite its enjoyable flavour, the relatively wide availability of unshū mikan-flavoured gummies makes this one unlikely for repurchase.

This Kaneka Foods x JA Wakayama Unshū Mikan Gumi contained 40 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Hong Kong in 2023.
