These Mr Chen’s Butter Chicken Dumplings were described as being ‘a perfect fusion of cuisines, inspired by the traditional flavours of the delicious Indian dish, butter chicken’. They were ‘filled with tender chicken infused with creamy notes of coconut and classic Indian spices’.

Each box contained 300 g or 16 dumplings.

Each dumpling was about 6 cm at its widest, and contained 46% chicken.

Prepared by steaming for 10 minutes, we liked that the dumplings held their form without their innards exploding into a hot mess. Upon tasting, the dumplings had tender skin — thick enough only to add structure — that bit through to reveal juicy chicken and cabbage innards that held their form. Despite the absence of a thick sauce, the filling delivered a well-seasoned butter chicken flavour with notable hints of tomato and coriander, and the coconut added a rounded, creamy mouthfeel without overpowering.

Overall, our enjoyment of these dumplings took us by surprise, and we’d be keen to eat them again to give some variety to our usual penchant for hargow.
